Blaine Primed Smooth James HardiePanel Board-and-Batten Siding With Gable Belly Band & Full Flashing System
This project rebuilt an existing batten-style exterior with a full Smooth James HardiePanel board-and-batten system rather than treating the battens as isolated trim pieces.
The old battens were removed, HardieWrap and flashing were installed, and the new wall fields were built with 4×10 Smooth HardiePanels and Smooth 1×3 battens spaced 16 inches on center.
A 5/4×8 belly band with flashing above it added a horizontal break at the gables, giving the project a distinct architectural detail as well as another water-management transition.

Removing the Existing Battens
Tearing off the old battens created a cleaner layout for the new panel and batten grid. This allowed the new vertical lines to be planned around openings, corners, and gables instead of inheriting the spacing of the previous exterior.
HardieWrap and Opening Protection
HardieWrap, 1 1/2-inch seam tape, 4-inch HardieFlash, 26GA window head flashing, W inside corners, flashing around blocks, and Z-metal created the documented moisture-management package behind the board-and-batten finish.
4x10 Smooth HardiePanels and 1x3 Battens
The new system used 4×10 Smooth HardiePanels with Smooth 1×3 battens at 16 inches on center. On a smooth panel exterior, consistent spacing and clean transitions are especially visible, so layout becomes part of the craftsmanship.
Gable Belly Bands
The 5/4×8 gable belly bands introduced a horizontal design line across the vertical siding pattern. Flashing above the band is important because every horizontal trim transition creates a place where water needs to be directed outward.
Painting Phase
Painting was included, but the source does not provide brand, colors, sheen, or coat count. Those details are intentionally left unassigned rather than inferred.
Why This Scope Matters in Pacific Northwest Conditions
Pacific Northwest siding work has to account for repeated rain, wind-driven moisture, shaded wall sections, and long wet seasons. The strongest project scopes do not ask the finished siding to do every job by itself. They coordinate the documented substrate, weather barrier, flashing, trim, blocks, soffit, panel seams, sealant, and finish details so water has a controlled path outward and the exterior can age as one system.
Outcome and Homeowner / Property Owner Value
The finished project is valuable because the visible James Hardie material is tied to the supporting work documented in the source scope. That makes the page a proof asset for KV Construction’s full-system approach rather than a generic materials list. Where a source detail is missing or ambiguous, this package keeps it open instead of inventing a product, color, repair condition, or location.
